Funny Fitness Fridays Episode 5: Bacon Prevents Hair Loss

When San Francisco Board of Supervisors voted to ban toys in the McDonald’s Happy Meal, they were finally taking a stand against big business advertising to children. Of course you can argue that parents are ultimately responsible, but the target is still children. Get your child a Happy Meal and they will be happy…Happy Meal = Happiness.

Tobacco companies are selling a nicotine dispenser full of toxins and unhealthy, cancer causing substances so why do we allow fast food companies to sell essentially an edible version…Fast food is essentially a sugar dispenser packaged to look like real food, containing various unhealthy substances. Have you seen what’s in fast food chicken nuggets for example?

Anyhow, in this week’s Funny Fitness Friday we bring back Jack from Jack in the Box with another short scene sure to get a smirk out of you.

Funny Fitness Fridays Episode3: When I Grow Up I Want to be a Vegetarian

Vegetarians have it rough sometimes when it comes to food choices. Without meat in the diet it’s often difficult to get enough protein in the diet to maintain muscle gains, strength and lose body fat. Although there are many great sources of protein for vegetarians, most people don’t know what those sources are. This weeks installment of Funny Fitness Friday features Jack and his son from the American fast food chain Jack in the Box. His son explains why he wants to be a vegetarian when he grows up.

Funny Fitness Fridays Episode 2: Has your training hit the wall?

This week’s Funny Fitness Friday you’re sure to remember. When I ask if your training has hit the wall, I mean literally has it hit the wall? Sometimes training can become so mundane and boring as there is no new input into your workout routine. You can’t think of any new exercises to do or maybe your personal trainer never brings any new ideas or progressions to the table. Right now he or she is scratching their head going…”huh? What’s a progression?”  Routines the last for months or years are for inmates and your fitness shouldn’t be like doing hard jail time.  So in the words of a good friend of mine, “If you’re in jail…Break Out!! And try not to hit the wall like this guy…

Fit Ladies Rock! Frumpy & Domestic to Miss Bikini

Jennifer Nicole Lee for her exercise DVDs

I picked Arnold Schwarzenegger, not as governor of California ( I voted for the other guy). But I did pick Arnold as a model for my fitness journey. As a kid, I watched everything involving Arnold, from the Conan series to Pumping Iron, if it had Arnold in it I was watching it. The funny thing is that after watching him on television I would go to my room and do push ups and flex in front of the mirror. That was me then…well I still flex in front of the mirror now. What can I say? I enjoy everything muscle. My point is that my model of fitness and my desire to change my body as a teen came from a fitness role model.

When it comes to ladies, who inspires you to go beyond and get better? There is a growing number of female athletes and fitness professionals and this is great because there is hope for the younger generations. No longer do young ladies have to scour the planet to find someone to inspire.  Check out Jennifer Nicole Lee as she shows how she lost 70 pounds and became Miss Bikini America.

Who doesn’t want to have a nicely shaped backside? With a little work you can get that shape you want, stay fit and firm, and fit into those tight jeans.  In my article Strong Glutes for Fat Los & Performance I talk about how important the glutes are to sports performance and athletics, but the glutes, when shaped and toned accentuate the curves of the body and enhance the physique.

Of course squats are still my number one recommendation for those of you trying to enhance this feature, but check out these 22 techniques to slim and shape your glutes. Your choice. Earn it with exercise or take the easy way out with padding, but remember padding doesn’t work on the beach among other places…

He Lost 120lbs & So Can You

What does it take to reach your goals? How long does it take to lose the weight you desire to lose? What are you willing to do to reach those goals and how much will you invest in yourself, your health and your life?

I love being a personal trainer because I get the chance to watch you change your life…I have the unique opportunity to help you overcome your battles with food, weight and body image.  The reason I asked these questions above is because while some people are doing it, others are simply wishing and hoping. We have an old saying where I come from and that is “Don’t talk about it. Be about it!”

The truth is that the weight that most people carry and the fat that has been gained didn’t arrive over night. So my news for you is that it’s not going to go overnight either. It’s going to take an effort, some hard work, dedication and commitment. But you can do it if you just take that first step. A wall is built one brick at a time so stop focusing on your wall and focus on each brick. You can do it!

Funny Fitness Fridays: Laugh & Lose Weight While You Shake that S***

With all this talk of stress and emotions affecting your ability to lose weight, we thought it necessary at Active Lifestyle to add a little laughter to your life. Did you know that according to stress.about.com:

A hearty guffaw will burn more calories than a nervous titter, but researchers at Vanderbilt University found adults burn an average of 1.3 calories per minute while laughing with their friends.  That’s about the same number of calories you burn while taking notes in a classroom or standing and talking on the phone.  But laughter has other benefits besides burning calories, including relief of emotional stress and a  workout for the muscles of the diaphragm, abdomen, back, and shoulders.  Read about the benefits of laughter from the Guide to Stress Management at About.com.

Now enjoy a little bit of a laugh while you Shake That S***

What’s in Fast Food Chicken?

Ever wonder what’s in a Chicken McNugget? Well, probably not. I’ve never wondered. I just look at it and ask myself how can that be chicken? Well for those of you who were not convinced by the movie “Super Size Me”, maybe you need a little more convincing about why you should steer clear of Fast Food as much as you can. And do your children a favor and keep it out of their lives. They may not understand now, but they’ll thank you for it some day.

every day, hoards of Americans consume these ingredients in Chicken McNuggets, which McDonalds claims are “made with white meat, wrapped up in a crisp tempura batter.”

However chicken only accounts for about 50% of a Chicken McNugget. The other 50% includes a large percentage of corn derivatives, sugars, leavening agents and other completely synthetic ingredients, meaning that parts of the nugget do not come from a field or farm at all. They come from a petroleum plant. Hungry?

Scariest perhaps is the fact that this recipe is a new and improved, “healthier” Chicken McNugget launched in 2003 after a federal judge called the deep-fried poultry bites “a McFrankenstein creation of various elements not utilized by the home cook.” Also terrifying is the fact that these McFrankenuggets are overwhelmingly marketed to children who love their fun shapes and kid-friendly size.
