Inspiration & Motivation

A major part of staying in shape or getting fit relies on both inspiration and motivation. What inspires you to change? What motivates you to get up and move in a new direction? Inertia can be a bitch for lack of a better term. No matter how hard you try to move that boulder, it just wants to stay at rest. Newton was on to something with this whole inertia thing as objects in motion tend to stay in motion unless acted on by some force. There are various forces acting on us daily that play a role in our progress or lack thereof.

So here’s the skinny. When you’re not moving or inactive it can be so hard to get going. We need a force to push us and get us started and most of the time that force has to come from within us. However, there are many forces that can provide us that initial movement. Sometimes it’s a doctor telling you that you have diabetes or high blood pressure and other times it’s as simple as a class reunion or event where you’ll see some old friends. Your motivation could be that your girlfriend or boyfriend has moved on without you or it could be a decision based on aspirations to look like a particular person you have chosen as a role model. Whatever your inspiration is, let it be the fire that drives you.

Once the ball is rolling though we often find tons of forces attempting to stop us. Some of those forces may be work obligations, friends, spouses, or numerous other things that just seem to get in our way. But with a little effort we can overcome those hurdles and obstacles. It is at this point that we need to remind ourselves of our inspiration, goals and our motivation for moving in the first place and use it as fuel.

Getting out of a rhythm can be devastating to our goals, but we have to find ways to get back on track.  We have a job to do as peers to provide the right type of peer pressure to our friends and family when they undertake their mission to finally reach their goals. I can’t tell you the number of times that I’ve heard people tell me that their friends don’t say very supportive things about their training or decisions to eliminate alcohol or other things from their diet.  Many spouses and significant others do more to subconsciously sabotage their mates progress than anything else.

We should take a closer look at ourselves sometimes and think about the things we say to our friends and family when they’re working so hard to change their lifestyle and health. Do we tell them they’re looking good or do we say, “yeah but your ass is still kinda big”? Do we say great job or do we say “you could have done more”. We are sensitive beings and for that reason we need a little positive reinforcement and motivation to continue on sometimes.

It is my job to motivate and inspire, but at the same time my profession requires me to tell people the truth about their progress or lack thereof. I have to find the balance between the two and give the good, the bad and the ugly. The rest of you out there do me a favor and don’t be that negative force that stops someone else’s momentum on their road to better fitness.

Active Lifestyle Rock Wall Outing August 21, 2010

After the awesome time that we had at the Racquet Club rock wall back on July 31st, we decided to invite some of the friends of Active Lifestyle to join us for an afternoon of fun and activity. We don’t talk it, we live it and not only do we make time for work, we also make time for play. A number of people stepped up to the challenge and joined us for this event. We had both new and familiar faces. We also had a wide variety of age ranges and skill levels ranging from 24 years of age to 50 plus with skills ranging from first timers to very experienced climbers. Who says you have to be young at age or highly skilled to be active? Age is a state of mind and after hearing of a 90 year old couple that plays Wii, there is no doubt in my mind that we are underestimating our abilities.

For those of  you who missed it don’t fret. We will be going again soon, but until then have a look at some of the great photos from our August 21st day on the Rock Wall on Picasa.

The Lifestyle Tree: Part I

Life is truly an amazing thing. We have been granted a life, a vehicle to transport our life’s spirit, and given free rein to do whatever we choose to do within our lifetime. Many of us use phrases like, “live life to the fullest” or “you only live once”, but we typically use those terms when viewing life from what in my opinion seems to be a negative perspective instead of the positive.

We use phrases like those to justify our reckless behavioral patterns when it comes to all aspects of our health. We use them to justify our smoking habit, our drinking habits, our sleeping habits and our working habits. When we indulge heavily in the richness of food and the poison of alcohol or we suffer from lack of sleep for work or even play, we are essentially wearing down our body. I hear people ask the question why should I eat healthy, live healthy when I could die tomorrow. Well that’s a fairly pessimistic and bleak way of looking at your life and a person who thinks in this way should take a moment to sit down and examine their life a little deeper.

Spice Up Your Green Tea

An example of a slightly higher grade of Chine...

So you don’t really like the taste of Green Tea but you’ve heard about all the health benefits it provides. Well here are a couple of ideas to help you spice up your Green Tea flavor and have you enjoying all the health benefits in no time.

I live in the hot city of Bangkok where having hot drinks just sounds unpleasant. Not to fear! We’ve got an ice cold solution for you. You’ve just come home from a visit with your personal trainer, where he seems to have put you through his own personal Boot Camp and you’re exhausted. Try a cup of iced green tea with a little bit of cinnamon and a dash of lemon to add that extra kick. It’s quite refreshing and delicious and is sure to hit the spot.

Wondering what to have before you hit the gym for some training? Food is often too heavy and your body will spend too much energy for the process of digestion when you really need it to focus blood flow to your muscles and extremities. So try having a pre workout shake with a few fruits, your favorite protein powder and use iced Green Tea as the liquid base. My personal favorite is vanilla protein powder, green tea, a teaspoon of honey and cinnamon; however you can mix whatever you like. The key is to experiment and have fun.

So there you have It folks; just a couple wonderful ideas to assist you along your path to a happy and healthy lifestyle. Drink up!
