3 Foolproof Tips to Stay Slim during the Holiday Season

Christmas lights on Aleksanterinkatu.

The holidays are here and so begins the onslaught of foods and tasty treats. Party after party is serving up snacks, pastries and drinks that are sure to get that waistline bulging. It doesn’t take long to do damage to everything you’ve worked so hard to keep in check all year as those fat cells are sitting there rubbing their grubby palms together in anticipation of extra calories to store.

Last year, I had a personal training client tell me that it was the first year in her life that she didn’t put on weight during the holidays. She awarded me the credit, but the credit belongs to her for following some simple rules during the holiday season. Now I’m here to share a few of the same tips that I gave her during the daunting holiday food festival. Read more of this post

Thanksgiving is just a couple of weeks away and if you’re searching for healthier alternatives to the normal, everyday side dishes then look no further than this great article full of solutions. I’m scouring the internet regularly looking for alternatives as people tend to think that the world is coming to an end if they have to eat health.

I’m hear to tell you that you don’t have to sacrifice great taste for health. This is the biggest misconception out there. You can still manage to create great tasting, healthy dishes if you are willing to try.

These 11 Thanksgiving side dishes that I found are excellent alternatives, but I would take many of the dishes one step further replacing any of the recipes that call for rice with quinoa and any of the recipes that call for flour with ground quinoa flour to give you a gluten free solution with a lower glycemic index that’s great for people trying to manage body weight and body fat as well ass diabetics.

Funny Fitness Fridays Episode 1: Fat people are harder to kidnap

FAT PEOPLE ARE HARDER TO KIDNAP

Image by Leo Reynolds via Flickr

It’s Friday and the weekend is almost here. We’d like to thank all of our regular readers, comment contributors and those of you who simply stop by from time to time. As our blog has taken shape over the past 4 months it has evolved, not only providing informative information, but sharing ideas and broadening awareness. Continue to follow us in the upcoming months  as we have something new and awesome lined up for the new year. We can’t let the cat out of the bag just yet, but we know you’re going to like it.

Anyhow, one thing we’ve decided to do is broaden this site a little bit. We take fitness very serious, but we do realize then need for a laugh or two along the way and so we’ve come up with Funny Fit Fridays. Today’s installment comes as a direct result of a personal training client and good friend. As he was walking home he spotted an overweight man here on the streets of Bangkok wearing a T-shirt that said “Fat people are harder to kidnap.”  My immediate thought was if this is the only reason to be fat then I’ll pass. Obviously this guy was content with himself, but I challenge you not to settle and strive to change your lifestyle, get active and be healthy.

However, I thought it was interesting so I went home and typed it into Google in search of a logo and up came tons of images and video.  This particular video is apparently from a Marriott commercial shot in Singapore advertising an all you can eat buffet. God bless Singapore because you could not get away with this commercial in the United States, but let’s learn to laugh a little more as humor is the best medicine for us all sometimes.

Humor is a major part of a person’s overall health. According to Elizabeth Scott, M.S.

Fit Ladies Rock! Frumpy & Domestic to Miss Bikini

Jennifer Nicole Lee for her exercise DVDs

I picked Arnold Schwarzenegger, not as governor of California ( I voted for the other guy). But I did pick Arnold as a model for my fitness journey. As a kid, I watched everything involving Arnold, from the Conan series to Pumping Iron, if it had Arnold in it I was watching it. The funny thing is that after watching him on television I would go to my room and do push ups and flex in front of the mirror. That was me then…well I still flex in front of the mirror now. What can I say? I enjoy everything muscle. My point is that my model of fitness and my desire to change my body as a teen came from a fitness role model.

When it comes to ladies, who inspires you to go beyond and get better? There is a growing number of female athletes and fitness professionals and this is great because there is hope for the younger generations. No longer do young ladies have to scour the planet to find someone to inspire.  Check out Jennifer Nicole Lee as she shows how she lost 70 pounds and became Miss Bikini America.

Lose Your Belly Fat Overnight

Excess adipose tissue around a male's mid-section.

Image via Wikipedia

Everybody is trying to get rid of that tricky belly fat that just won’t seem to go away. We were told to do sit ups. We were told to buy electrodes to put on our skin that will miraculously shape and tone your six pack.  We were told to wear crazy outfits that would sweat off the fat while all we had to do was lay there and do nothing. Can someone please come forward and show me when any of those things has worked and who they’ve worked for.

The truth about your belly fat is that it’s not going away without a fight. It wants to be there and it’s in love with your mid-section. Some think that it’s a ancestral genetic trait to store body fat at the mid-section as this makes it easier for the body to carry. The close the weight is to your center the easier to move it. I mean you don’t really see people with enormous ankles or fat wrists. No one has extremely fat forearms or very fat calves. Well they do , but not without the rest of their body being just as fat. The bottom line is your body likes to keep storage in the tummy, hips and butt.

So how do we get rid of it? Well, here are a few things you should consider if you are to lose your belly fat overnight.

  1. Get a good night sleep. All those late nights out clubbing or late nights in front of the Television are killing your goals. Sleep is essential for your body’s repair process, which if you exercise needs to happen regularly. Sleep loss also limits fat loss by decreasing leptin which is a natural appetite suppresent. Have a look at these articles.

    3. Drop the late night alcohol consumption. Well I prefer to drop alcohol in general if your goal is to lose body fat. It does nothing positive for you in any way. Not only does it destroy your ability to uptake nutrients because the alcohol takes precedence over all other substances as your body looks to remove this poison as quickly as possible. Also the excess calories intake doesn’t bode well if you’re trying not to store calories.
    4. Cut out the late night snacks…at least the junk food snacks. If you’re going to have a late snack, try low glycemic foods like cottage cheese, milk and some fruits like berries. Those are good low calorie snacks that will keep you full and help you avoid sending your body into starvation mode, slowing your metabolism.

TRX Training in Bangkok

Often times when I say TRX to someone they look at me like I’m crazy and wonder was I talking about a prehistoric dinosaur or training equipment. I’ve written articles about travel training and portable equipment and the TRX is by far one of those “no brainer” devices that makes exercise easier for the traveler. The TRX is a suspension trainer that allows a person to do body weight exercises while suspended. By varying the angles and speed of movement you can work on strength and power and with most exercises the TRX challenges stability.

In Bangkok, there are very few places that maintain authentic TRX products, but fortunately for us at Active Lifestyle we get the real deal at Studio by FIT in Ploenchit. Studio by FIT offers TRX group classes which are always fun and enthusiastic.  The large metal frame allows for multiple TRX’s to be suspended from it which is awesome.

For the clients of Active Lifestyle this is also great because whether we’re in a personal training session or a group training session we can utilize this frame for both demonstration and activity all at once. Our clients love the TRX as they’ve seen it on The Biggest Loser Asia. It’s a great device to integrate into your workouts for variety, a little bit of core and stability challenge. If you haven’t tried the TRX before then it’s high time you did.

So here are some tips to keep you moving towards your fitness success. Remember success belongs to you and no one can define it for your life but you!

Stay off the Scale & Lose Body Fat!

Weegschaal2

Image via Wikipedia

You get up every morning and you get on the scale. Why? There’s some sense of diligence and deep inside you want a way to make sure your weight is staying the same. My question is who cares what your weight is doing if you can’t fit into those jeans ladies or your belt still hasn’t gone over a single notch in the right direction gentlemen?

The scale neglects to take in a key factor and that is your ratio of fat to muscle. Muscle is very dense so it takes up less space but weighs more. Fat is not as dense, weighs less than muscle but takes up much more space.

A few more useful indicators of your progress is to measure body fat and overall fitness.

How do your jeans fit? Are your clothes any looser than they were previously and do you feel more comfortable in them?

Do you feel less exhausted than you did before? Are you able to move up and down steps, breathing easier and feeling less fatigued?

How about your overall strength? Have your sets and reps at the gym improved? Are you able to lift heavier than before, endure more reps?

Stop letting the scale, pounds and kilograms run you into the ground mentally when you’re making loads of progress all around, looking and feeling better. You may find that your stress over the scale is doing more to inhibit your progress than anything.

What’s in Your Fridge Part II

We’re revisiting the refrigerator and asking you what else is in your fridge this month? In Bangkok it’s difficult to get Quinoa, but those of you in other regions have no excuse as it’s readily available. But what else should be in your fridge if you’re looking to shed some body fat and lose weight? We’ll take a look at five more items that you may want to consider stocking up on.

  1. Berries – Blueberries, raspberries and blackberries are all packed with cancer fighting antioxidants. Not only that, but berries have a lower glycemic index than other fruits so they will not cause such a large spike in insulin levels. This is great for diabetics, but it’s also great for people trying to lose body fat as insulin is related to fat storage in the body. Berries are also packed with loads of fiber.  Fiber is great for intestinal health and helping lower cholesterol levels. Looking for fruit to fill your fridge with then berries is the way to go. Testimonial for Todd & Rich

I normally would simply post a testimonial in its proper section within this page, but this didn’t come to us as a testimonial. It came to us out of an impulsive desire of one of our team member’s to share her feelings with us. I recently wrote about Inspiration and Motivation and I mainly tackled the issue from the perspective of people trying to lose weight or needing the support of peers on their fat loss mission. Sometimes inspiration and motivation come from the people we ourselves are working to motivate and inspire.

I don’t have to look for reasons why we do what we do for a living. Everyday I am reminded why I do my job. It’s the sweat and the drive that I see in the people we work with as they overcome obstacles that they never dreamed of busting through. It’s the smiles that I see on the faces of the people we work with. It’s the changes in mood after a long day of work where a person came in with a frown and left feeling fantastic. Our motivation is in the 20lbs lost, the 35lbs lost, the dress size that’s getting smaller, the doctor taking one of those medications off the list, the 5K completed and the lifestyles changed. We believe everyone has the inner ability to perform better, feel better and grow stronger every day.

It is the people that we work with that inspire and motivate us and keep us getting up at 5am and leaving work at 8pm. It is your goal that becomes our goal and it is the commitment and dedication that lights our fire and keeps us burning brightly. We want to say thank you.

I wanted to share a short note that came from one of our super stars this afternoon. She authorized me to share this with you and we thank her for that.

“Hey guys, just wanted to say thanks so much for everything you’ve done for me, for the last three days I have been totally pain free, it might not seem like much, three days………….but when you’ve had constant pain in your knees and hips for well over a year what I’m experiencing now is remarkable, no dull aches, no twinges going up and down stairs, and just generally over all a million times better, also………usually with my period I have extreme lower back ache that lasts for hours and days, some days I can barely stand or bend over, and this time around…….. nothing, absolutely nothing, you can’t imagine how happy this makes me, anway just wanted to say thanks so much!!!! You’re both worth your weight in gold.
lots and lots of love for you both.”
